#44 • Early Tall Slender 4 Gallon Tobacco Spit Churn
Part of Clayton Winter Pottery Auction (timed auction by K and B Auction)
High bid $76.00
Status: Sold
Uncertain of the origin of this early pottery churn with an unusually colored tobacco spit glaze in a grayish brown. It is marked with an incised "4" under where the lug handle would be. It originally had a handle on one side and a lug handle on the opposite side but both are missing. There is an old turned wood lid with a home made wire handle. This churn is taller and more slender than most 4 gallon churns. It has some rim chips and a repaired crack that runs around half of the churn about 2" from the base. Unusual churn with definite signs of age. Measures 17.75"H not including the lid x 7" in diameter at the base. it does widen slightly about half way up. KS
