There are six additional illustration by Billings throughout the two books. The same image is printed on the title page and also embossed on the back cover. There is pressed decoration rimming the edge of the front cover as well. This is a book which had a profound impact on attitudes toward slavery and helped to fuel the abolitionist movement. In addition to the title and author, other information on the title page includes the volume number (written as VOL. I or VOL. II) "Ninetieth Thousand. Boston: John P. Jewett & Company. Cleveland, Ohio: Jewett, Proctor & Worthington. 1852." On the back of the title page it reads "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1851, by HARRIET BEECHER STOWE, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Maine." and "Stereotyped by HOBERT & ROBBINS, New England Type and Stereotype Foundery, Boston." then lastly "Printed by Geo. C. Band & Co, No 3 Cornhill." It was entered into Congress in 1851 because the writings in these books were originally a serial 40 week column in The National Era beginning 1851. Condition issues include exterior wear to the front and back covers and spine, Separation of pages form the spine - most notably in Vol I, some foxing, a few dog ears, in Vol I the 1st two blank pages are missing as well as at least one page with text in the back. Even with the condition issues, it is rare when such an early publication of this book comes available. KS
