Status: Sold
This is a highly sought-after two-gallon (2 Gal) glazed stoneware flagon, manufactured in Derbyshire, England, by Pearson & Co. (Chesterfield) Ltd.. What makes this specific piece exceptionally rare and valuable to collectors is the presence of its original matching ceramic screw cap, as these threaded stoppers were easily broken or lost over the decades. The Maker: Pearsons of Chesterfield operated from 1810 until closing its doors in 1994. They were famous for manufacturing heavy-duty, salt-glazed utilitarian kitchenware, commercial flagons, and even naval rum bottles. Historical Markings: Vessels of this specific size and design usually feature stamped impressions near the handle or base plate. You will often find the British Royal Crown logo alongside an "A.M." (Air Ministry) stamp or a broad arrow government mark, indicating it was manufactured under contract for British military or official state use. Design & Finish: Features a classic rustic, highly reflective two-tone dipped glaze—traditionally a golden-mustard or deep-brown top section paired with a putty-white or tan stoneware base. In amazing condition, there is just a small chip on the screw cap. jrb.
