This is certainly an interesting piece despite it's condition issues. The art is very similar to Claude Lorrain's seaport paintings. This work was actually painted over an image of the 1492 World Map, upside down. The stretched canvas is very old. It's wearing thin and has a tear near the bottom. Top paint is cracking and peeling and several larger areas of the underlying map can be easily seen. The frame is ugly and not original but does give us something to hold on to when we have to move the painting - it is definitely a handle with care piece. Original canvas is 33x44"; framed is 37x48".
